Valencia Washington

As a full-time abstract artist, Valencia Washington merges her life experiences in her work, where she explores the connection between lines, color, shapes and the impression music had on her growing up. Inspired by provocative icons what starts out as chaotic vision soon becomes a passionate symphony of lines and nontraditional imagery, which allows her to express emotions in the moment without hesitation, creating fluid art that inspires others to dream in color.

What do you aim to say by the themes in your art?
The themes I want to represent in my art are how black people aren’t normally seen in society. I want to show us in out of the box scenarios.
Where does your inspiration come from?
My inspiration comes from Black culture. Lyrics, Clothing, Attitude.
Do you have experiences that impacted your art?
I growing up I always felt different. I knew I was just a little weird. So I think I used being an outcast to my benefit.
Do you feel your art challenges existing barriers?
I would hope that some kid out there will see my art and know that we aren’t monolithic and that’s ok.
What are your long-term artistic goals?

My long-term artistic goals are to open up my own studio and give kids an outlet to express themselves.
What advice do you have for aspiring artists?
Always be yourself. Never let anyone diminish your dreams.
