Abhishek Tuiwala
I am a Sculptor, drawing and installation artist with B.F.A. (Sculpture) from V.N.S.G.U., Surat, Gujarat; M.F.A. (Sculpture) from Pratt Institution, Brooklyn, New York. I have been part of many online and in-person exhibitions conducted worldwide in India, the United States and South Korea. Apart from that, I have attended various sculpture workshops on Clay Modeling, Moulding, Castings and carvings. I also received scholarships, grants and many national and international awards for my work.
About my work:
The essence of humanity is all about culture, ethics and identity, which helps us understand people. Every human being is different yet the same. My compositions are the observation of people around me, including myself. I love to use humour as an element in my compositions to make my artwork more engaging and expressive. My keen observation teaches me many other things, like how a person deals with a situation and behaves in a given case or with a person.
My recent works are based on cultural disparities. Being an immigrant of New York, I always compare the difference in my lifestyle, which I was living before in India. My research study's primary aim and objective are to investigate the effect of lifestyle changes between two cultures. Due to many surprises, I felt great joy and struggle in adopting new lifestyles. However, keeping aside all the matters, I have always tried to define lifestyle through my creative artwork. I have always tried to convert all the unfavorable circumstances into possibilities and have accepted them as opportunities.

What type of art do you produce? How is it unique?
Every art is unique. I don't follow any particular type. According to my idea, I choose the style to execute it. Deciding to work on a specific type of art in the early stage of the art career won't help you think broader. I am working on both abstraction and figuration simultaneously. The great thing is that both of them are getting appreciated equally. So, without thinking much about the type, I focus on the demand of the idea. I think that honesty and skills make my art unique.
What message/feelings do you aim to convey through your work?
My work is my perspective of how I see the world/people, including me. From physical forms to my personal feelings and intuition, as simple as that. I aim to convey just one thing through my work. Whatever you're doing, put your head and heart in that. The result will be way better than your expectations.

What do you enjoy the most about your field of work?
It's just one thing - Process. The process is more important than the result. The result is just the byproduct of the process. That's the reason I choose to work with the metal medium. It's lengthy and meditative. I have to give the same importance to every step, from clay modelling to molding to casting to finishing the piece to get the desired result.
How have you become the artist that you are today? What exposures have influenced you?
Art gave a new identity - to me, my family and my community. But it was a struggle. A meditative struggle, I would say. After coming to the United States to Pratt and working these last two years, has been indeed a life-changing experience. It has changed my perspective towards everything. Accomplishing Prestigious awards, scholarships, exhibitions from different art foundations are other exposures of my last two years. These achievements always boosted my confidence and motivated me to imagine more for my art.
What valuable insight can you share with upcoming artists?
I would say, don't think about the result. Because generally, people start thinking about the result first before executing it. In this field, this kind of thinking never works. I have seen many students who were doing great as fine artists in academics. But, overthinking about the future breaks their fluidity of work and shifts them towards something else. Just believe in yourself and push yourself out of your comfort zone whenever possible.
