BIOGRAPHY
RONIS VARLAAM PHOTO_edited-2.jpg

I have studied filmmaking at the London Film School and produced and directed several documentaries for TV, mainly for Channel 4. Gradually my interests moved to art in general and now my practice includes painting, photography, videos and conceptual art. But I am primarily a painter.

I have taken part in more than 30 exhibitions, and I have been included in more than 10 publications. I have taken part in the Jerwood Drawing Finalists exhibition, Creekside Open, the Discerning Eye, the National Open Art exhibition and at the Royal Watercolour Society, Florian Museum in Romania, Melina Mercouri Hall Nicosia, Project Berlin and Scope Art in Miami. I have also taken part in events at the Venice Biennale and at the Louvre.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I work in series. The paintings in the MIRROR series include mirror stickers to expand the space of painting in the same way  Barbara Hepworth expanded the space of sculpture with 'holes'.  THE NATURE OF THINGS is an experimental series that has passed through various stages. Recently it has developed to the point that I discovered a new way of applying paint to figurative paintings and a new style of abstract art. It is something new, only the 5th way of applying paint to a surface in the 50,000 years of the history of painting.  IN THE ABSTRACT again uses mirror stickers and unpainted linen.
