Michael Wagner
Born in Heidelberg in 1953, during the course of my studies on Mannheim University I used every free minute for artistic studies, so that I could concentrate entirely on the fine arts after completing my degree. From 1981 I lived in Heidelberg as a freelance painter and graphic artist (self-taught). Today I work with a variety of visual media and use it to create my extensive artistic universe.

What do you aim to say by the themes in your art?
Well, basically I am concerned with the presentation of a world view that renounces confinement and categorization. Life is infinitely manifold. It consists of a stringing together of temporal sequences, which we may interpret for our orientation. Nothing is fixed. So we should also renounce this and look at life/the world in a way that puts love in the center, the universal love of life, the love of being.
Where does your inspiration come from?
I find that difficult to answer. Well, my 68 years of life play a role, my family, wife and two children. My knowledge, my experiences. But it is always the urge to express myself musically. In addition to my artistic work, I am also a musician and poet. Part of my life takes place in a realm far removed from everyday life, in the realm of colors, sounds and flying language. It is a great enrichment that I want to share with other people.
Do you have experiences that impacted your art?
Of course. My encounter with Concrete Art had a decisive influence on me. And before that, it was the encounter and confrontation with Expressionism, Surrealism and Pop Art that influenced me early on. My benchmark is the work of the Swiss artist Max Bill, whose consistency I greatly admire.
Do you feel your art challenges existing barriers?
No, I don't think so. I would like to leave that to others.
What are your long-term artistic goals?
The development of a mature and at the same time fresh and agile body of work that enriches the art of my time.
What advice do you have for aspiring artists?
Develop and maintain your personal artistic attitude. Always remain yourself and do not let yourself be influenced by the art market.
