What do you aim to say by the themes in your art?
The themes of my work are always people-focused. I try to capture the way we live, the actions or behaviors that are typical for our society. I purposely look for that which is typical, almost mundane, because I feel like it will all be very different in a few decades and art is the best way to teach us what we came from. It is a brilliant way of documenting how society evolves.
Where does your inspiration come from?
The inspiration for my work comes from people. I love the fact that we are all different, and I think it should be respected and celebrated. No matter what job or what background a person has, we are all contributing in some way, and looking closely at this subject, I feel like there are endless possibilities for inspiration.
Do you have experiences that impacted your art?
I suppose I could say I had a challenging upbringing, which forced me to notice things I perhaps shouldn't have at such young age. Nonetheless, this has led me to reconstruct them in a slightly different light, or colors: the story or subject is still the same, but the viewer might be attracted to the colors or brush strokes before realizing the issue they are facing. So I guess my whole life has shaped how I look at society, the things I notice, and in turn how I interpret this in my work.
Do you feel your art challenges existing barriers?
At the moment I'm trying to stay clear of anything political, although in the past my work often reflected on the effect of our behavior on the environment for instance. Right now I focus mainly on the lives of women. Through my work, I try to celebrate and highlight the things women are allowed to do so to speak (as opposed to some other parts of the world). I paint society specifically through the female perspective.
What are your long-term artistic goals?
I'd love my name and my work to be featured in major collections and art books.
What advice do you have for aspiring artists?
Be persistent. Do not give up, no matter how hard it might seem at certain points. If not sure what to do next, keep doing what feels right until a new idea comes to you.
