What do you aim to say by the themes in your art?
My art is about my culture, my poetry and feelings. This painting is called Saudade and this is a Portuguese word that has no translation in English or any other language. The meaning of this word is basically a big void. Like an absence. An absence of a person or a moment. A blue and red feeling that grows under the skin. That feeling can freeze and burn your heart at the same time. It's a sense of loss that is greater than "I miss you" or greater than anything in the world. It 's just Saudade.
Where does your inspiration come from?
This art came from a broken heart, in a moment of deep sadness. And this is perhaps the greatest beauty of my artwork Saudade. The beauty that can come out of pain and sadness. The power of turning a gray limbo into a beautiful art. My life and my moments are my inspirations to create
Do you have experiences that impacted your art?
All my personal experiences that impact me in some way, become art. I am an actress and a painter, I use my whole life as an artistic source.
Do you feel your art challenges existing barriers?
Art is the way that I break down my emotional barriers. But it's also the way I found to survive as a black woman. Making art transformed me into an immortal creature and powerful woman. This body can die, but my art it's going to survive. Society and all forms of trying to erase my history cannot work. Because through the paintings I’m immortal.
What are your long-term artistic goals?
My biggest dream is that the whole world can see my art. I want people to relate to the power, happiness and sadness that I paint. This real imaginary word that I create in every paint. I want those little stories to travel all around the world.
What advice do you have for aspiring artists?
Keep going. Don't give up. You'll get more "no" than "yes" kind of response, and that's a fact. But that is going to make the small victories bigger than the stars. Just keep walking.
