Giovana is a Brazilian nature-driven filmmaker who tells stories that educate, inspire, and connect audiences. Through short narratives, documentaries, and still images, her purpose is to encourage bonding with the natural world by presenting it as part of the human experience and an outlet for exploration, not exploitation. These interests led Giovana to an exciting start in her career as a part of the Monterey Bay Aquarium's film & video team. As a production assistant, she spent most of her time operating the camera and editing her footage. This opened her eyes to the role of media in contributing to the conservation of the planet and unlocked her passion for impact storytelling, which is what she currently pursues as a graduate Film & Media Production student at American University.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Birds in the City features digital and analog shots taken in DC and NY depicting the daily life of street birds, ones that are usually overlooked by people’s busy schedules. Each shot tells a story, and the idea is for audiences to find similarities with their own routine and habits. This series emerged from Giovana’s love for birds and urge to present them as beings who are worth people’s attention and respect. The work was produced in Giovana's first photography course, meaning the pictures were developed, edited, and printed by her. The lenses used for this project varied between telephoto zoom (80mm-200mm) and wide-angle zoom (35mm - 70 mm).
