Fragments of Memories

Artist: Zainab Mumtaz

Based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Fragments of memories (2020-2021), reflects a period of transition of my career as I found myself navigating the ethics of my practice, drawn towards minimalism and working with natural materials. A journey of finding a way back to myself, reclaiming and perceiving my voice. Deliberately deconstructing the secrets of nature and finding the connection with the divine.

Zainab Mumtaz (b. 1992) is a Jeddah based contemporary artist, colorist and researcher who seeks to capture sense and emotions through Abstract Expressionism, Conceptual art, Color field painting, Geometric Abstraction and Minimalism. Finding its roots in nature, her work epitomizes the complex details of creation bringing into focus the dynamic and dramatic world behind simple things around us. The incentive of her practices is drawn to deconstructing the geometrical aspects of nature and exploring the mystery of existence, finding a connection with The Divine. While the process of her work is firmly rooted in traditional practices, Mumtaz finds herself repeatedly drawn towards nature. Researching and working within the realms of alchemy and materiality, she uses natural pigments derived from rocks, clay, botanicals, spices etc. along with charcoal, lead, handmade paper, watercolor, gouache, silver & gold leaves. In her prevailing series ‘Root Bridge Portal’, she captures the very essence of an ambiguous geometrical shape, Vesica Piscis in a simple, emblematic and enthralling way leaving the audience to explore and interpret the spell bounding beauty of the secrets of the Universe.
