Bogdan Bousca
Born in Constanta, Romania, the “Naval Academy” graduated, Bogdan Bouşcă started photography in 2008. For 12 years he has participated in over forty photo exhibitions over the world and has articles and editorials published in more than thirty magazines, permanent artist of one important art gallery in Toronto, Canada, and is active in many auction houses over Europe. At present, he runs one of the most important photo events in Romania, called “Narrative Nude”.

What do you aim to say by the themes in your art?
I have a few photographic categories where I intend to express my mind through images: “Fine art nude”, “portrait”,” street” and an attempt of “seascapes”. In each one I try to insert a theme, without having a large project. My goal (regarding these used themes) is based on narration without words. The only few words that I use are those for the title, in humble attempt to give a hint to the viewers of what I wanted to say. Technical part is the last thing that I follow despite that it’s a minus in this century, where technology prevails in front of the essence of what actually means that object, piece of art etc... The short answer is this: I aim to say by my themes first of all a short novel and after that an image. I try as much as possible to unite two things in one: narration and photography in the same time, an image who speaks.
Where does your inspiration come from?
The main inspiration source is daily quotidian. All what happens around us or with us it’s greater and larger than any other sources (novels, movies, other artist’s works or tutorials etc). This includes also dreams, “actions” that can be absolutely gorgeous if you have the good intuition to take all the good from them. By having an honest and sensible soul it’s possible to filter all these inspiration sources with beautiful result that can amaze even your own person, without being selfish.
Do you have any experiences that have impacted your art?
Oh yes! More than 90% of my works are based on my personal experience. As I said before at your previous question (is somehow related to this one) my state of mind and soul are mainly influenced by unavoidable quotidian circumstances who lead me to “develop” an image. It’s hard for me to enunciate some strict experiences. Just I would like to answer at your question with a question. It can be an answer quite good. “Why all art pieces (entire art categories) are created from sufferance and pain (bad things)?” I never saw a piece of art created by a happy person. Why “the bad” creates “the beauty” and why “happiness” creates nothing? It’s a paradox who fascinates me all the time and proves me that “the bad” and “the good” are very good friends after all.
Do you feel your art challenges existing barriers?
My only challenge is myself. The main and hardest struggle is with me. There are no other major barriers in this process. I’m the worst enemy and barrier in what I try to create. Very often this fact is a huge disadvantage for moving further.
What are your long-term artistic goals?
My long-term or short-term goal is to keep on with this insistence to have a narrative image based on soul and action instead of fake beauty mixed with abnormal colours, excessive post-processions or hi-tech gadgets that create the illusion of what beauty really means and who represent absolutely nothing, an empty balloon filled with wind. Unfortunately the major and most used Art Album is the last instruction manual of use for any photographic devices. I don’t want to say that this issue is generally available to all, but I assure you that it covers more than 90% of what your eyes digest every day no matter what source you’re opening. I want to insist to don’t get me wrong! I don’t have anything against technology! Contrary, I appreciate it and admire it. Just in my opinion it “erases” the essence of art. Exactly how aesthetical medical surgeries destroys the natural beauty.
What advice do you have for aspiring artists?
Follow your soul and heart. Forget your brain and close your eyes. Do and create what your soul asks. Every soul has their needs. It wants to escape somehow and is always stopped by a very logical and (paradoxically) conservatory brain. I’m talking about photography now. Before any start, please decide what you love to do and after that develop this with a camera. Don’t waste your time trying to find your photographic domain. A good landscape photographer loves to travel. A good fashion photographer is himself a fashionable person. A street photographer loves to walk and loves the city crowd. A good wedding photographer loves the marriage act. And so on … it’s not possible to have good results without considering this as a start. If you like stars - start astrophotography. And in no matter style that you decided to have - put your heart first and let away the pixels amount, focus on lenses, last tripod generation or brand new fancy drone!
